"I´ll build you a house out of Schweinskopfsülze" - Design and construction appropriate to the material
Thanks to today's diversity of materials, modern planning tools and novel processing techniques, the design possibilities for builders currently appear (seemingly) almost unlimited. With this, at first glance, epoch-making achievement, which is due to the wealth and technical ability of modern industrial societies, the hitherto proven concept of material justice seems to have lost its validity as a design guideline and quality standard. It assumes that certain materials are indissolubly linked to certain design and construction solution principles and that materials can be associated with clearly delimited functional performance patterns.
This notion was comedically turned on its head by the satirical band "Die Doofen" in the 1990s with the title "Ich bau Dir ein Haus aus Schweinskopfsülze" ("I'll build you a house of pig's head brawn"); also by the artist Meret Oppenheim with the famous fur cup ("Frühstück im Pelz"). Both, however, implicitly acknowledge the existence of this maxim through persiflage.
It is generally accepted that a sound knowledge of the physical properties of building materials is an essential basis for qualified design and construction. Nevertheless, the choice of material requires a much more complex consideration, which includes the field between physical and mechanical properties on the one hand and associative perception on the other.
In the context of our research seminar, the concept of material justice will be investigated in a differentiated way across materials. What is the role of the maxim that materials decisively influence the shape and structural concept of an overall building according to their characteristic properties? What does the interpretation of "material design" mean? How is the term sustainability to be understood in this ambivalence? And how can this lead to strategies for future-oriented building?
We would like to approach this topic with the help of various lectures, discussions and a small design exercise. The seminar will be offered in a cross-faculty form for students of architecture, civil engineering and technical education and will be supervised by architects and civil engineers. The final point of the seminar will be the mutual presentation and comparison of the design results worked on in groups. Solutions for an elementary construction task will be investigated in different materials according to the respective material properties.
