Paratypes

Information-based and computer-aided strategies of architectural design can be found today mainly in two areas: on the one hand, in the management-related or organizational area in the form of BIM systems, which are aimed in particular at organizational productivity through improved information flow and more efficient teamwork. On the other hand, in the area of parametric design with the aim of developing new types of construction, or production and design, for the purpose of the structural implementation of non-elementary geometries.
More rarely, digital tools are used in the field of conceptual, head-based design itself, the design method that paradoxically still dominates the design practice of architects, despite the increasing use of digital and digitally supported methods.

The seminar thus aims to test digital methods in the conception, development and optimization of building organizations and spatial references and to use them profitably for possible parallel design work. The digital capture of the design concept simultaneously provides the basis for further processing in the form of BIM systems.

"Paratypes" in this context are spatial knowledge constructs based on information strategies with the aim of supporting early design stages of building conception and allowing us to better understand and structure the thought processes underlying the design process. Parallel participation in the design "Up To 10" is recommended but not mandatory.

About the online teaching:

As the computer pools of the university are closed until further notice, a working computer or laptop at home is a prerequisite for this module. Programs can be downloaded for free as a student. The seminar will take place online via web-ex conference. Using the "share screen" function, everyone can follow the procedure on the lecturer's screen or temporarily share their screen in case of questions. The students will receive an invitation to the Web-Ex conference by email.

It is advisable to download the app from this link beforehand, but participation via internet browser only is also possible with a few small restrictions. Files will be exchanged via Ilias. Exact dates for the conferences will be announced. As soon as the participants are fixed, all participants will receive an info mail with technical and scheduling details about the organization and the course of the semester.
