Building with Wood

Seminar Winter Semester 2019/20

Design and Construction - Building with Wood

A complete overview of the building is the focus of the module Design and Construction, which is taught in an interdisciplinary form for students of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Technical Pedagogy. The aim of the seminar is not only the typological comprehension of buildings, but also the understanding of the interrelationships between building use and chosen construction. This will be examined in the winter semester 2019/20 using the example of new possibilities in timber construction. To this end, building analyses, lectures and building tours will be offered.
As part of the accompanying seminar exercise, the interdisciplinary student competition "Light up! Building extensions with wood" will be worked on this semester. The result of the exercise can be submitted as a final entry to the competition. In the course of the design task, the inner-city densification potential with the building material wood is to be examined. Specifically, a design and constructive solution is sought for the two-storey extension of three existing residential buildings from the 1960s in Vienna. Further information can be found at: http://www.proholz-student-trophy.at

The seminar module is intended to practise interdisciplinary teamwork typical of the profession and to promote an understanding of the argumentation and decision-making criteria of the departments involved. Accordingly, the seminar performance in interdisciplinary groups is required, the willingness to work together in a team is considered a prerequisite for participation.

Submission of competition entries to proHolz: March 31, 2020
The submission of the design exercise at the IEK will take place around mid-February.
