La Zarzuela Madrid - Grandstand Extension of a Horse Race Track
The "Hipódromo de la Zarzuela", located in the northwest of Madrid, is the heart of Spanish horse racing with its bold grandstand roofing.
Developed in 1935 by the engineer Eduardo Torroja in collaboration with the architects Carlos Arniches and Martín Dominguez, the widely cantilevering concrete shell construction made of horizontal single-skin hyperboloids was a groundbreaking engineering achievement at the time and is internationally regarded as an icon of 20th century engineering architecture.
Following restoration and refurbishment of the entire complex in 2008, horse racing competitions have become increasingly popular in recent years. The spectator seats divided into three grandstand sections regularly prove to be insufficient for the audience at international tournaments.
Therefore, a generous extension for the spectator stands is to be designed and constructed as part of the student design. Special attention will be paid to the connection of the new structure to Torrojas building, which has been under monumental protection since 1980. In addition to the design concept of the spectator terraces to be developed, the structural details of the structure are also to be worked on.
Cooperation with students of Faculty 2 (Civil and Environmental Engineering) is explicitly encouraged.
