Entwerfen und Konstruieren

Seminar Winter Semester 2021/22

Entwerfen und Konstruieren - The Waiting Game

Bus stations and bus stops are spaces of transit, arrival and departure, and waiting. They form special building blocks in the urban fabric of our cities. Often these special traffic junctions, which are supposed to protect passengers from precipitation by means of a wide-span roofing, show themselves as shapeless non-places, which lack any architectural claim. This also applies to the long-distance bus transfer point in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. In the course of the increasingly important long-distance bus network, the situation found there no longer appears acceptable as an appropriate appearance of a state capital.

Within the framework of our two-week block seminar in the winter semester, we would like to examine the building typology of bus stations in more detail together with you. At the beginning, well-known examples by Foster + Partners, Santiago Calatrava, Schlaich Bergermann und Partner as well as the BUS:STOPS in Krumbach by Sou Fujimoto, Smiljan Radic and other international architects will be discussed. Following an analytical holistic consideration of the building type, a standing-room design exercise will be carried out to find an architecturally high-quality and constructively sophisticated solution for a contemporary, identity-creating roofing of the long-distance bus stop inStuttgart Zuffenhausen.

The design exercise is offered in a cross-faculty form for students of architecture, civil engineering and technical education and is regularly supervised by architects and civil engineers during the seminar. The final point of the seminar will be the mutual presentation of the different design solutions in the group.
